1987 Bayliner 4550. Previously “Fighting Irish”. I went to Purdue and my brother went to Notre Dame so that name changed quickly. Anchored off Blake Island, Puget Sound, spring 2021.

Back in 2008 when National Liquidators had sooooooooo many repos, I made a special trip to Belize City where I spent time with THE guru of converting big inboard diesel boats into outboard powered boats. Specifically for Bayliner 45’s which could be had for a song back then. It was very doable, and this was way before all the super hp outboards had been invented. Suzuki 225’s would more than do the trick. Strip off all the running gear, struts, etc. discard all the engines, move the generator to the forward part of what used to be the engine room for some balance, add big aluminum motor mounts with 45 degree hollow boxes from the bottom of the boat to the back of the mounts, and two 225’s would theoretically give it 25 knot speeds. Of course one could also readily buy big Suzukis for cheap in Miami. Some even had bills of sale. . It was a idea.

A even marginally maintained set of Hinos are excellent, although it would depend on the usual variables. Classically, the Hinos are a simple power plant that better than average fuel economy. You will notice, if you aren’t familiar with Hurth Transmissions, you are going to notice a sound like rock crusher when the boat goes into gear. It’s a combination of three things. 1) ZFHurth transmissions are built with significant gear lash; 2) the coupler plates are worn, but not worn out; 3) Hinos lope at idle. So you get an idle that’s unsteady and slack in everything between the flywheel and shaft coupler, it’s not surprising that there’s a rattle.
That said, Yanmar seems to be the replacement engine for Bayliner owners. They are lightweight, relatively, reliable and deliver excellent performance.
