Any America(39)s Cup Fans?-gctid352164

We decided to take advantage of some decent weather today and took the boat out on San Francisco Bay to shake out the cobwebs. My daughter (8 months pregnant), my son-in-law and me were just having fun and enjoying the view...

When off in the distance I spotted one of the Team Oracle AC45 catamarans out doing practice and testing...

I thought I'd give the kids a thrill and show them an AC boat up close. So off we went in pursuit...

I was doing 18 knots, the AC boat was changing jibs, moving slow. Besides, there was under 10 knots of wind. What could go wrong? It was only a matter of time before I would run him to ground. Or so I thought...

About this time, the cat was squared away, off the wind and flying a hull. Even his chase boats were losing ground...

I was on a fool's errand. Off he went into the distance, chase boats struggling to keep up. Truly marvelous. The technology and engineering embodied in these boats is so far ahead of what it was when I first started messing about on the water - it's like going from the stone age to the iron age in a generation.

Wait for the wind. I expect to see these boats at over 40kts. I raced Cats for over 20 years and I can honestly say I can't think of anything more on the ragged edge than one of these is a typical 25kts summer day on the bay. Watching these boats race will not be like watching grass grow. They will need all of the bay. Years ago the monohull guys stuck there noses in the air with their supposed superiority over the cats.

The 45's are toys compared to the actual Cup boats - 72'. WOW! When one of those pitch-poles coming down the city front the rear guard is going to be 6 stories up in the air. Mayhem!

      I can't wait - I'll have a ring side seat...

Here's a link to a YouTube video if one of the Oracle AC45's doing a sumersault on SF Bay:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

And another of capsizes during the Plymouth, England Wotld Series races:

I had the luck to go for a Sail on the ETNZ 45, these are fantastic boats and can't wait for the 72' being built now.
