My inverter got ruined last season by dampness? in the engine compartment. They are supposed to be mounted close to the battery which it is and of course the batteries are in the engine compartment. so how do you prevent yours from ever seeing dampness and getting ruined? I'm looking for tricks of the trade, are there any?

Inverter is not supposed to be in engine room of gas powered boat - it is not spark protected. That part out of the way for those that have mounted in a bilge (diesel boats) and not had problems with water is because they located somewhere that stays dry - look for a place that has dust and you are on the right path for the type of place to put it.
Generally - higher up and further forward are good directions to go.
It takes big cables and passing through a bulkhead to install properly in a gasoline powered boat, sometimes you need to move the batteries as well.

Thanks for the info, my bad!In reading threads posted a couple of years ago I understood that was the place to mount them. I guess the question should have been where should I mount my new inverter but I see theres a tread all ready started on that one.

You need to do one of two things. First off the inverter needs to be inside the cabin away from the engine compartment.
So you either need to have big mother cables from the batteries to the inverter capable of the distance or move your batteries we closer to the inverter which is inside. You should not how ever put batteries inside the cabin.

Xantrex does/did make an inverter that can be mounted in the engine compartment of a boat, Carlos has one.
If you have anything other than a Xantrex IP1012, get it OUT of the engine room now.
