    Bad deal-gctid404621

Im back from Afghanistan and will be picking up my 96 2655 from the shop this Thursday. Come to find out the list of work I had left him with was not completed. This guy has had my boat since February and has only recovered the interior seats and rebuilt the motor. He was to install a generator, re carpet the interior, install bilge heater, service outdrive, install A/C, and install 3 batteries. He did the motor and one battery and the interior cushions. Now im stuck with doing the rest myself. The total agreed price was $5000. Had my dad drop the boat, genset, A/C and a ton of parts in February. I paid half up front and was to pay the rest on completion. I dont want to pay him much more money for the work he has done, still waiting on him to send me a finalized bill. This is a bad situation and dont want to make it worse with the poor attitude I have right now. Think im going to cut my losses and do the rest of the work myself. Any thoughts?

Sorry bout yer luck, might as well handle some of the more important items yourself but hey get out there and trash the old carpet before you replace it! Have some fun you deserve it. Thanks for your service.

Only an idiot fails to make money on a large boat project. Looks like you're in the right village.

This is not what you want to hear, but if this is his work ethic, I would scrutinize the work that he DID do as well.

If you have the estimate in writing, have him agree with you an amount to deduct from the final bill for the work that remains undone. You need to tread lightly as he could lien the boat and not release it back to you. It would be better to come to some agreement.

$5,000 at $75 per hour would be only 66 hours. Let's see how many hours he spent so far.

That is a bummer sorry to hear it. Boat work is hard enough to get done while you are close by, from AFG it is going to be hard to stay on top of it... make a deal, cut your losses and get it done- still time to boat this year! You didnt see Ed's boat in that yard did you?? (Sorry Ed...)

          Thank you for your service.

its depressing, wanted to spend some nights on the hook and enjoy it, still can as its ready to use but not what I was thinking, with A/C and a genst. Its my fault to not have picked the right guy. There is always an excuse from this guy. Im not one to be polite about something like this, but I will be this time so I can get all my stuff back and not wind up in trouble.

Glad to see you made it back safe and sound !

So lets see if I undestand your post ...

You hired a person to do labour only, you supplied the parts and materials ?

The work you were to have done was:

              • Install three batteries
              • Re-upholster the interior
              • Re-carpet the interior

All the above for $5000.00 labour ?

So far he has Rebuilt your engine and totally re-upholstered your interior and you have paid $2500.00 ?

What is the quality of the work he has done so far ? Since you are not asking for money back I assume it is satisfactory.

If that is the case I would be patient as you got a fantastic price in my opinion.

Great price if it's great work? Sure.

However, no matter what price the guy agreed to... if he also agreed to do it within a certain time period, and is now well past that, there's an issue.

True if the work is no good then there is an issue ... however I am looking and seeing about $11,000.00 worth of labour. So far the OP has paid $2500.00. Is it worth the additional $8500.00 or thereabouts to have someone else do it ? Just a question.

I supplied all parts with the boat except for the fabric for the interior. I was told the boat would be ready for my return, its lake ready now but doest have the genset, A/C, or carpet installed, along with some other small items. I can do all these things myself but wanted to use the boat complete on my return home. I had regular emails with the guy and they said nothing about skipping some of the parts installs.

Well that is too bad. I can understand your frustration I hope it all works out for you in the end

Just out of curiosity, this guy rebuilt the motor himself, and he also does upholstery work, and boat restoration stuff?

Or does he farm stuff out?

First, thank you for your service. Second, I don't know what the other side of the story is but it sounds like you received what you paid for so far. He's probably running a business which has most likely done poorly for the last few years, so when the season came about this year he got busy and put you aside so he could make some money to keep his business going. I understand a deal is a deal, but there is the real possibility he desperately needed the new business and money to stay afloat.

Thank you for your service to our country...YOU ROCK!

Here is a thought, if the work he has done thus far is to your satisfaction, perhaps an agree to have him complete the work at the end of the season. I suggest this because 1) you got one heck of a great price. 2) you get to use the boat now. 3) no change of him placing a mechanics lien on the boat. 4) The install of the AC and genny is a good 30 hours plus.

Any agreement you make, get it in writting.
