Great Loop Trip Confirmed - need advice on side trips-gctid401121

Well, our plans to do part of the great loop ( NY/Great Lakes/Mississipi/Gulf/ICW/NY) are now solid. Barb and I will be flying off to Paducah Ky, on August 29, to join up with the "Shirley Ruth" at Green Turtle Bay Marina on her next leg of her journey along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway to Demopolis Alabama. Shirley Ruth is a 42' Grand Banks currently on the loop and under the command of Captain David Grill, who has graciously accepted our offer to crew for him on that leg of the loop. We have never been in that part of the country and are looking forward to a great trip and cultural adventure. Here's the thing...once we get to Demopolis and disembark around Sept 14th, we will be looking to do a side trip while we are in that part of the world. Some initial thoughts include a bus trip and excursion to New Orleans, and/or other interesting places of culture or historical value.

Appealing to any BOC members who live or have travelled this part of the US, we would be interested in your thoughts on where to go in the deep south with about one week available before flying back to BC, Canada.

The offer to crew is south of Green River. Captain David has other guests/crew aboard from Chicago to Green River. The boat left New York on June 1, and currently somewhere on Lake Michigan on the way to Chicago. We would have liked to do the total leg from Chicago to Demopolis, but crew arrangements were filled for the first part.
