    Planning our vacation...-gctid400355

The missus and I are planning our vacation for the end of August. We are going to do 5 days on our boat, we are trying to decide if we should go to Westport up the Rideau or Peterborough up the Trent Severn. I have limited knowledge of either waterway except the Rideau from upper brewers to jones falls. I am seeking info from all who have traversed either of these waterways to these locations. We will NOT be staying on the hook as we will be bringing our dog with us (100 lbs rottweiler), so we will need to tie up and maybe even have a spot when tied up so he can get into the water for a lil swim, and get back out easily. What would you recommend and where would you stay the night?

Both of these trips were on our "to-do" list. Last year we did part of the Trent-Severn. Peterbourough up to Port Severn. Loved the trip! Two couples, two boats, one dog. 5 days. Found the canal system to be very relaxing, easy to navigate, and never boring. The various locks add a nice variety to the day and doing these trips in August means beating the worst of the crowds. Lots of towns along the way for the all important (apparently) shopping. It is one large park system with knowledgable, friendly attendents. We split our nights between local marinas and staying "on the wall" at one of the locks. I think it is one Canadas best kept secrets! ENJOY!

This is one of those rare situations where there's no wrong choice. You will enjoy either route. Because you're limited to 5 days and starting in Kingston, I'd suggest the Rideau. This saves you the better part of a day each way to and from Trenton.

Can the dog get back onto the boat via the swim platform?

Have you got a copy of http://"http://www.portsbooks.com/cr...: <br /> Ports?

Be sure to plan on a dinner at http://"http://www.theopiniconresort...Opinicon Lodgeat Chaffey Locks. Call ahead.

Some people who try to get too far up the system feel like they rushed the trip. Set reasonable distances when planning your days. Depending on how you like to pace things, Merrickville might be too far for a 5 day round trip.

At this point, NO, but we were going to get one of those paws aboard ladders for him but there is still the issue of him getting from the platform over the transom and vise versa.

Not yet on the to do list

That may be a bit far for us in 5 days, this is why i am thinking maybe Westport, who knows may be a bit further up depending
