    Water leak-gctid348062

I have been trying to hunt down a leak for the past year. In the aft berth there has been water getting in on the starboard side. You can see the water dripping down the carpet wall onto the sill then onto the floor where the mattress lays.

I found a gapping gap in the vent hole for venting the engine compartment. On the inside of the vent hole there was a "V" shaped piece of wood that I guess is to send the water back out. The caulking was missing..... tried to fill the void the best I could, still a small area needing to be filled. I need a miniature elf to get to it.

Today I went below (having the boaters blues) and holy crap what do I see, water drippings in the aft berth. This time I also noticed, on the starboard wall there is a ;eater wrapped board and the water appears the be dripping in two locations from the board. [B]Does anyone know how to get this board off without ripping it off. I would like to use it again because it matches the interior.

Don A, my water leaks have been well documented here on BOC. I, too, have a leak in the aft cabin on my 245 SB. Mine is actually leaking on the port side and had also made the mattress a mess along with my other water issues. Bayliner had sent a field tech from Arizona to my boat in New Jersey to do work on the boat to repair the water damage issues. He had told me that he has seen leaks in this area before and the only way to find it is to pressurize the entire cabin. Seal everything off and blow air in to pressurize it and then do the old fashioned way of a solution of soapy water and a spray bottle and start spraying around the outside of the boat. He had said a lot of times it at the seam of the deck to the hull. For me, my dealer/marina has to wait until the Spring to find this leak as my boat is already shrink wrapped. I hope this helps a little. - Tom

Thanks Tom, I will keep looking. That sounds like an expensive excursion. Do you have that "board" on the side and if so, do you know how to get it off.

Yesterday, I took off the cover (cowl-I believe its called) to the venting area to the engine compartment. I'm going to try and seal this area better. While doing this I noticed some caulking on the rub rail had shrunk, I will re-caulk this area also.... And the fun begins.

I am not really sure what "board" you are talking about. Prior to the field tech from Bayliner coming to my boat, the mechanic at the marina sprayed water from a hose onto the port side of the boat for about an hour. At the rub rail, the vents anything he could think of that could leak. No luck. Then in the aft cabin on the 245, there is a panel about 15 inches by 6 inches that is near the top by the headboard. It is held on by 2 screws. He removed that and you get a great view of the vents, behind the galley wall and aft cabin wall. I now sprayed the hose while he looked inside. Again nothing.

We told the field tech of our efforts and he said for some reason spraying water on the outside never works. He doesn't know why, but it just doesn't. So that is why he gave instructions to the mechanic to perform the pressurization method I mentioned before.

That sure looks like it could be coming from the rub rail. There isnt a whole lot there that it can leak from without being able to trace from. Pull the rail, get that vinyl pad off there by unscrewing the rail. My guess is your guna find your leak there.

Oh I am one of our resident 3055 leak sealers lol....

Thanks for the info, I will give that a shot. This dam thing has been a thorn in my side for the last two years and will post my findings.

Its good to know I have a expert leak guy to get a hold of.

our P.O was an idiot.. the metal trim around our boat up on the port side bow had small dents in a few places.. The master berth port side area was always getting its carpeting wet. We searched the porthole windows and nadda.. The :arrCapt got in the Zodiac with one of the teenage Sherpa's and his trusty chaulk gun of clear Silicone, and made a zip bead all the way up and down the boat. TOUCHE' we finally fixed our leak after a few months of mystery leaks.. the leak would make the carpet wet from the windows to the floor, which had us puzzled cause we couldnt see drips.

For what it's worth, I also had a leak in the aft berth that ran down the port wall and eventually traced it to water leaking in where the radar arch attached to the hull, The caulk around the arch was not done well allowing water to leak. Recaulked and no more issues.

We had a leak in our 285 at the same spot. It ended up being from where the windshield is screwed on.

it was followingthe top of the interior to that point.

That's interesting. When we originally tried to find the leak, we took the gasket away from the bottom of the windows and exposed the screws. I will say that the craftsmanship was not too good. The holes drilled through the aluminum channel for the screws had huge burrs sticking up that were blocking the flow of any water that drained out at the appropriate spots. We did concentrate the water flow from the hose on those screws but could not create a leak.

In a 3055 that is not a possible point of the leak where the dripping is occuring, they are built much differently.

Waiting for a little warmer wewather and will recaulk the entire rub rail. I'm affraid if I try and caulk now in the cold weather, the caulking will not apply properly. If it still leaks I think it will be time to commit harikari. LOL

I believe that the board you are talking about covers the seam between the hull and the topside. It is screwed on from the outside of the boat, under the rub rail. You have to take the plastic insert out of the rub rail to get to the screws. I think that's a pretty common source of leakage.

Make sure you use 3m 4200 or better That way you wont have to go back and do it again.
