Hi All, It's me again with another concern. I bought a new pump for my live well and bait well. Now I have always believed that in order to pump water into a boat, the thru hull fitting had to be below the water line? I have discovered that the thru hull fitting in my boat that was hooked up to the water system is in fact about 18" above the water line on my boat. The old pump was froze up solid so I bought a Rule tournament series 500. Now I am planning on a new thru hull, "below the water line" unless someone on this site informs me different. I am attaching a pic of my boat and looking at the far aft end the lower thru hull fitting is where the original pump was tied to. I have looked at this hole and hose many, many times trying to understand how this system could have worked. Is my thinking all wrong or was the original pump not hooked up properly? Hope the pic works.

Yes, to pump raw water into your live well, washdown, or head you'll need to pull from below the waterline. A through hull 18" above the waterline is probably a discharge for either the live well or a bilge pump.

Mine is off the transom, with the pump just inside.



It runs forward into the well,

...and with a raised drain extension in the tank, the water drain through a port side thru-hull about 4" above the waterline.

Hello Cpt Crunchie and Builderdude. I surely appreciate your helping me get a grasp for a boat like I have not owned in the past. Had 5 different boats but none with a system of water tanks. I have another question about my bait holding tank and my two, what I would say are holding tanks to keep large fish alive, both of these tanks are in the floor, one on either side, are about 4 ft long and 2 ft wide and hold about 20 gallon of water. If my old system, that the pump was bad on, was actually a discharge pump for these two tanks, then how do I fill the tanks? I have looked all around, under and into the interior and cannot for the life of me find any below the water line fittings to see how this can work. Unless there is a pump that is hidden I cannot find to fill these tanks. Actually, I did find one below the water line thru the hull fitting just below the live bait tank but cannot see any hoses to that tank.

Those tanks in the floor are fish wells, yes, but I put ice in them, not fill them with water.

The biggest problem is that they are not insulated, and are right beside the engine, so even the ice doesn't last very long. The macerator - on the helm switch titled 'Fish Wells' - is connected to both floor tanks, though there is a trick to getting them both to drain. I drain the one that wants to drain, then I have to plug that drain so the pump will pump out the other side. I'm guessing the idea was to be able to bleed fish out, then macerate the parts being flushed.

That said, my macerator recently gave up the ghost. So, I removed it and put a one-way valve in its place. Now both drain and the back-flow preventer doesn't allow water from outside get in. Considering I've maybe used them twice, I'm sure I won't miss them.

Unless you have a head, your live well should be your only below the waterline thru-hull. But if you have a head, it could be that.

My live well is directly below the backwards facing seat.

Okay, Mine is very similar to yours. Both fish holding tanks are just like yours, my live bait tank is farther aft but in same area. I did find below the water line a 3/4" thru hull fitting on the bait tank but don't know how it fills?I am not aware of another pump in the boat. I have not traced out that system as yet. A good job for tomorrow. I guess maybe I will have to turn my new pump around the opposite direction and pump out the water from the melting ice. Thanks for your help. You may hear from me again.

Could you take a few photos and post them? One of where that thru-hull is. Another of your entire transom. Another of inside the engine compartment to the port side of the engine all the way aft. And if you can get your camera in there, a shot of the bottom of the live well tank.
