A charcoal filter would not have been standard in a 38xx to my knowledge. The vent routing travels under the master head, on top of the outboard stringer to the front of the refrigerator bulkhead then does an imitation of of a snake to the loop and vent. According to Peggy Hill, the recognized "Head Mistress", charcoal filters limit the two direction flow of fresh air required for the black water bugs to do their thing. I just read her latest edition of her "how to get rid of boat odors" and it is well worth the $18 it cost on Amazon.
I replaced al of my black water hoses and vents last year and after reading her book am going to make some slight revisions.
