    Temperature mystery - 1997 2252 cierra express-gctid821710

Going nuts here - Temp gauge always reads 175 once motor is warmed up. I can kill engine and restart as many times as I want and temp gauge acts normal. Once I take boat out (ocean) after about 10-15 minutes the gauge starts dropping to about 100 degrees, it also moves around a little. Kill engine, restart, stuck on 100 degrees and will continue to be stuck until motor is completely cooled then the process repeats. I've replaced the sender - same issue. I've replaced the gauge (not fun), same issue. Could this be the actual temperature and some kind of circulation issue or worse, a wire issue? Help Please!

sounds like the thermostat is stuck open.

      Engine details?

Assuming your running a closed cooled system

Did you check the T stat? Could be sticking open.

That is actually common in raw water cooled engines because of the debris circulating in the engine due to the open cooling system. All it takes is a flake of rust or a grain of sand to hold the stat open...

This might sound crazy but what I've done (got tired of pulling out prefectly good stats) is when it's open (normal temp reading) take a small hammer and tap all around the Thermo housing to jar any flakes etc loose. It's actually worked twice...

Thinkin OP has a closed system with his "normal" temps at 175. Maybe he has typical baliner gauges reading high
