  • New boat owner, Trim motor up and down problems.-gctid821068

Hey guys, I just joined the club. Have rented boats all my life until now I bought a 1994 Bayliner Capri 1850LC.

I am having some problems with my trim controls. Down trim usually works, up trim is the big problem. I think the button isn't seating correctly and I should get a new button (easy part).

The solenoids seems to be real finicky as to when they want to work. I switched the wires on the up solenoid to the down solenoid and it worked pretty well so I think the up solenoid is going out.

My mechanic buddy recommended to replace both solenoids.

Anyone have any other suggestions or where to get good parts?? Thanks!!

You can get them almost anywhere, here's one of many.

You also could be having a problem in your trim limit circuit, try using trailer up switch when having problem with trim up. I personally bypass the limit switch for this reason.

The one in my link will work. There are several manufactures and cost is all over the place but they all do the same thing. I used Sierra 18-5817 it replaces Mercury 89-96158

Be sure you take a look at your current solenoids to see what they look like There seem to be two types - one with a flat base (flat mounting bracket), one with an elevated base (L-shaped mounting brackets which raise the solenoid above the mounting surface). I can't tell which type the one Dave linked is.

If you buy from Amazon, be careful to read the reviews. A lot of the sellers are using the wrong pictures, and you'll think you ordered one with an elevated base and get one with a flat base (or vice versa). I ended up buying from my local boat and engine store since their price was only 70 cents more than online.

I found it guys. thanks for the help!! Trailer up works so it must be the switch.

trailer up switch is only used when you load the boat.

try this switch, if the drive raises... most likely it's the limit switch as megamark mentioned.
