Boat motor flame arrestor cover meanings-gctid820148

Good morning. Over the weekend I went to a boat salvage yard looking at buying seats for my bayliner 1850 and ended up getting other stuff. One of the things I picked up was a boat motor flame arrestor cover that says 260/V8 for my wellcraft Mercruiser 383 motor. I want the label to be redone to read the appropriate numbers. I plan to have a vinyl sign shop redo it. I was told that the Mercruiser 383 V8 has 350 hp. Is that correct? Does that mean then that the label on the motor cover would read 350/V8 or 383/V8? Can anyone help me on this? Thank you so much.

The labels matching the realty is like completing the job of the power change. Verifying the variables like horsepower can be the most difficult. That it's a 383 is something many of us can relate to, after that, what cam? What intake? What heads? Balance/blueprint? Ignition? All of these would need to be provided to a knowledgeable person to get a rough estimate. There may be a dyno shop that can rate actual horsepower to the prop.

It's not something most do, but if you go with some nominal information 383=350hp, others are going to be interested in copying or getting the decal from you. Just thinkin

if your engine is a 383, should've come with its original cover...

however, it should say 383 MAG Stroker

I bought the boat last September. The boat and motor are from 1987. The motor was rebuilt 2 years ago. I just have the previous owners word that its a 383. But from the top looking down it looks like a generic 350 Merc. There is no plastic identification on the motor.. However there is stuff stamped on the flame arrestor.

The boat and motor are from 1987. The motor was rebuilt 2 years ago and the new instrument gauges were put in place with it. Technically I only have the guys word that its a rebuilt Mercruiser 383 Stroker V8 but it looks brand new and runs like a dream. I just bought it last September.

Your original engine was likely a 5.7 that was rebuilt and stroked, so it should have the original 5.7 cover. The cover for the modern Mercruiser 383 carbed version looks like this.
