    Engine Oil Leak-gctid818487

I just had the starter on my boat replaced and i took it out this weekend and everything ran great with no problems right until I was on my way to dock the boat. I started hearing a loud beeping noise, and after a bit of research I found out that it was an alarm for low oil levels. Checked the dip stick and it was correct the oil level was pretty low. So the next day I put in about 3 quarts of oil checked the dip stick about 20 mins. after putting in the oil and it was at the perfect levels.

I then took the boat out for about 1.5 hours and again everything ran great had no problems at all. When I got back to the dock i checked the bilge and i could immediately tell that it was full of oil. Checked the dip stick and again it was showing almost no oil on it after just putting in about 3 quarts a few hours before.

I'm not sure where to begin looking for the leak, my first thought would be the filter, but before i start digging around wanted to see if anyone else has ever encountered this problem and what the problem ended up being. Also would replacing the started have any affect on this? Not sure if its possible the mechanic could have smacked into the filter or something and cracked it, kind of at a loss of where to find this leak.

Bring the oil level up to full.

Wipe the oil filter cartridge and oil pan drain plug as clean as you can get them.

    Wipe the bilge clean also.

Place a white rag, towel, cloth or ???? underneath the oil pan and oil filter.

    Start the engine up.

Look for an oil leak by wiping a clean white paper or white cloth towel underneath the suspect areas!

It is very likely that the oil filter cartridge was not tightened correctly!

      Is it a saltwater boat?

Did you just do an oil change?

Accidentally hitting my filter doesn't do a thing. Using a strap wrench and putting all my 190 pounds behind it sometimes makes it budge...

Could be so many things, this is about the only way to find out where your leak is coming from.

Do you have the relocated oil filter kit? There were some years that the hoses failed resulting in a redesign. Just another place to look. Plus another on laying towels, old, approved ones down to help locate the leak. I found that, for me and what it's worth, an absorbent towel that works really well is called "oil pig". I got mine from Amazon.
