I am considering adding the Garmin GPSMAP 742xs Chartplotter/Sonar with an in-hull transducer to my 642. Anyone have this installed or other experience with this model?

In hindsight, I'd now buy a bigger screen. Having the nav chart up with the sonar and radar on, plus engine data along the side, the moment I 'goto' a waypoint, those screens get very small. I'm now looking at either a 10" or 12" screen, and use the 741xs as a backup and/or to view engine data.

Thanks, Kevin! I too would like a bigger screen. I'm currently using the Garmin GPSMAP 78sc Handheld in a Ram mount - screen size 1 1/2" Width x 2 1/4" Height; a great unit but certainly small. Unfortunately, the dash area for install is only 9" w x 7" h. Just a bit too small for the 942xs overall dimensions.
I suppose I should consider other brands also in case dimensions are more convenient. But like I said the Garmin handheld has been great. And I've owned two Garmin Forerunner GPS running watches that have performed great; so, I've had good experiences with Garmin.
