    1990 3288 Stuffing Box HELP!-gctid812252

    Hello Everyone

If some could let me what size of packing I should be using for my 1990 3288 Bayliner with 150hp Hinos

Reason Im asking I just had the port engine repacked by my mechanic and it over heating 120 degrees at 1200 rpm and I have loosened the nut off until it almost falls off with only 4 threads left and there is only 2 pieces of Traditional waxed flax packing in the stuffing box , when I pull the nut right off water flows in

My Mechanic says on the port engine there is not enough room to push the nut forward and work in the 3 of flax packing ?

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

    Thank you

    Lars

I have a 3218 with gas motors and use 1/4" GFO packing, 3 rings,

Make sure all previous packing was removed or 3 rings won't fit,

Also check that you have water flow from the 1/4 cooling line coming from the motor, that might explain the high shaft temp,

I could only get two rings in mine. No issues after three seasons. After loosening the nut was is still running hot?
