Washington state boats have to get new hull ID # (39)s THIS YEAR!!-gctid808962

This is the first I have heard of this maybe I'm behind the times. Sounds like a pain in the ass to me for no reason.

They say it's for DHS so I have a question for the state when are you going to fix our damn drivers license issues with DHS??.. but you can force this scrap on us.

WTF? Sounds like it falls under the category of the scariest words in the English language "We are from the government and we are here to help you . . . "

I'm guessing it covers all bayliner cruisers as there hasn't been any built recently.

It's not like they couldn't have told us last year. Jeeze all Washington boat registrations are up in 15 days.

It's not all boats or even all Bayliners. When transferring the title for our 1980 Encounter, the hull number was out of compliance because it had an extra digit, a zero at the end. Years ago it was explained to me that mention the boat was actually built in 1979 for the 1980 model year. Fortunately, I was able to offer that knowledge at the time of the transfer. It is a compliance issue with the USCG and not that big of a deal, other than locating your title.

Here is the link to the licensing web site - 1/2 way down is the PDF file that "explains" it http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistr...renewboat.html

USCG- the year the hull was built is the year of manf, not when they finished the boat.

My 3870 has a 83-84 at the end of the SN. the 84 is not the year of manf. 83 is. per USCG on a documented vessel.

My 1979's never was questioned. I'm going to go get tags for mine next week see what happens.

They are also saying you have to have a tag on the inside too. I know mine don't. None of my 3 do.

Neither does my dinghy. So what do I do put a tag on opposing side of a 1.5 × 2 foot piece of wood?. Hahaha.

the HIN was supposed to be standardized (by about 1970 or so). some boats didn't exactly follow the guidelines.

WA simply wants to have them standardized and perhaps DHS too.

So, old boats (prior to about 1970) are being re-badged with new HINs

as are newer boats that didn't follow the HIN rules (exactly).

Another variant is typographical errors. I have a Novurania and its

registration indicated a HIN that was non-compliant. However, it is

just a typo in the registration data. It was necessary for me to have

the registration's HIN typo graphical error fixed by the state. It was

                fairly painless (in my case).

Its not just WA. I had to have it fixed for OH. OH sent a similar

broadcast mail to only the boat owners that they suspected had incorrect HINS,

So the regs say must be on starboard side. With that said any boat with it on the port like all of mine must be changed. What year did they change to starboard? My 1979 is port my 1988 is port.

Sounds like if its on the port side you have to move it. If its too long younwill need a new # if you dont have one kne the inside of the boat younwill have to install one.

The news was saying have a plaque engraved and I imagine what rivet it on???? That doesn't fall
within what the regs are saying. A riveted one can be removed but regs say it has to be something that will damage the boat to remove

Use a dermal and engrave it carefully.

Yeah I suppose if you wait until the very last day. If you wsit until the last day only to find out that your HIN needs fixed then what are you going to do if you plan on using your boat like so many do.

Hey I'm going boating this weekend better go get my tabs. Oooopppsss.

As fare as a number inside the boat the fed regs say it must be on a placard that cannot easily be removed, epoxy a placard to the inside the hull.

Years ado Tollycraft put a second hull number on the bottom of a galley drawer.

Most manf.. have a second hidden HIN somewhere on the boat.

In case anyone is wondering, I received my training from experience and the Chapman School of Marine surveying in Florida, of which I was near the top of my class.
