Hi guys...what would you think a won't start / not running 1986 Contessa 2850 single engine small block with no trailer would value at in and around Southern California?

It's awfully dirty and definitely needs lots of clean up and rubbing compound. There is no significant hull damage. The transom seems to be solid, the fuel tank looks to be in good condition.

What's your thoughts? I'm just looking to get a rough idea.

Sorry I wasn't able to take photos.

    Thanks

Around my area not much if anything. The boat on the hard or in the water? How long since it ran? I looked at one similar right before I bought my 2556, it was a SBC VP single prop than ran Guy was asking 2700 no trailer.

This one is sitting on an aluminum trailer I want. The owner wants to sell both together. I'm just trying to figure out if the boat standing alone is worth anything or if it's worth anything if I put it on my current trailer. Owner says it hasn't been started in six months.

        Hard to say.

A non-operational boat falls into the FREE catagory........ and as most of us know..... free boats are NEVER free!

However, given the year and model, being Volvo Penta is a plus.

Not started for 6mos is not a problem really as long as it does start and has no problems. My boat sits 5 or 6 months a year during winter with out starting..

Hasn't run in 6 months means the motor blew 3 years ago.

List the boat for free on CL, offering free delivery since you will have a trailer. If no takers, you'll have to pay to take it to the dump.

If it's the flybridge model someone might want to restore it.

If you have a place to do it, it would have value parting it out. If it did run, that would be a plus.

6 months no starting is nothing. The reason it wasn't started may be.

Visualize how it could look at its best by just cleaning and polishing. Then get an estimate or two of the cost of having a "pro" clean it up and buff it up to get it there. A change out of the spark plugs will probably get the engine running. Now how does that look for a asking price? Is it still going to be a rough looking boat with a "needs interior" or could it clean up to be reasonably "clean". You can take some average similar "in good condition" boat asking prices, take 10% off, then 2x the cost of cleaning it up, and you should have a reasonable idea of the value, which could be negative.

In that case you could give it a good wash and scrub, put it on your current trailer and sell it as a "diamond in the rough". The reality is to look at it as a used car that is in a comparable condition verses reasonably clean. Dirt and oxidation cut the value to almost zero in the marketplace.

We inherited a 1989 2958, no trailer hadn't been used in quite a while. A broker made a $1000.00 offer which offended the family for the reason they have owned it since 1994 & had a nice 07 rigid achilles with the same year 9.9 engine. We told them we would take it & see what can be done with it. Had the $1000 spent having boat hauled out and put on rental trailer plus the cost of rental trailer. I know more about cobra drives now than I ever wanted to know & have a ton of maintenance/ cleaning time into it without a near end in sight.

However much time & money you think you need to put into getting the boat back into shape....triple it. Knowing what we know now the $1000 offer was reasonable as the tender was the only value in the package.

I'll guarantee the transom , stringers and engine mounting blocks are at least wet if not rotted. And more than likely the gas tank is not far from springing a leak.. All the old girls show their age.

In my area that trailer is near 10k new. Not sure what the used market brings for it where you live but if it's in good condition probably at least a 1/3 maybe more?? What year is the trailer? Triple axle, definately large enough for your 2556 what's he asking?

The trailer is in excellent condition...just filthy. Tire must be relatively new...they look to have full tread and no weather rot or cracks. The disc brakes have some surface rust but otherwise look to be great.

15k capacity and the thing is 35' long...it's definitely overkill for my boat.

I'm suppose to make the guy an offer by today. What should I offer for boat and trailer?

The boat seems like an awesome boat...who knows, being the pack-rat I am I'll probably end up keeping it as a project.
