    Unsinkable?-gctid797124

Is my boat, unless it's cut in half, unsinkable? I heard a rumour that all US leisure boats are required to be unsinkable? If so, what sizes boats, and as per what year?

    Thanks

Replace "iron" with "fiberglass" but you get the point...

Here is a link to the coastguard regs regarding floatation. It may float but.only at the surface.for for a time.

Boston Whalers are unsinkable due to construction. Most every other boat, however, will "sink".

By sink, I mean they will "float" under water, not sink to the bottom unless seriously compromised.

In general the Coast Guard requires boats less than 20 feet in length to have enough flotation to prevent them from sinking when swamped. The requirements differ and depend on the way a boat is powered. Here are the actual rules, the first few pages summarize the requirements: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...BOIohA&cad=rja. Note that inboard or stern drive boats under 20 feet are not required to float level.

Boats 20 feet or longer do not have t meet flotation requirements.
