    Which 305 do I have???-gctid754666

Hi all! I'm a newb when it comes to boating and obviously new here. My apologies if this topic has been covered here before.

I recently acquired a 2002 Bayliner Capri 2150 that has a 305 in it however, the engine is toast (cracked block). My question is; which 305 do these boats use? I know it's a standard rotation V8 but is there anything special that I need to look for in a marine crate engine? I'll most likely use Summit Racing for one of their marine engines but I noticed there's a few varients of them.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

      +1

Marine built 5.7 physically the same but with more power and likely about the same in cost.

I've pondered that idea as well. Anything special I need to look for (I.e. internal vs external balance, with or without crank sensor, etc...)?

          First, welcome aboard BOC.

Consider the 350. Same block as the 305. It will align with the bell housing, mounts etc.

What 305 do you have in the boat? That will help determine the scope of the project.

And what drive? If and Alpha G2 the max HP rating for that drive is 300HP. Keep that in mind when selecting a replacement motor.

Post 96 Mercruiser engines are Vortec engines,

Check the gear ratio on your A1 G2 if putting in a 350

From what I can tell, the boat has a 305 center bolt head, standard rotation engine in it. Besides that, why other info would be of interest??

How many intake manifold bolts does it have? 12 at an angle or 8 straight down. Post a pic.

                  Two or four barrel carb?

You don't have to worry about internal or external balance. 305 and 350 use the same flywheel and balancers.

Marine engines have brass freeze plugs, stainless steel head gaskets, a marine cam as far as long block parts. All the ancillary items are marine specific, carb., distributor, starter, water pump.

Michigan Motors and Eagle Engine Sales have new and reman engines. Use someone that deals with marine engines daily. They can tell you what you need. High compression and big cams don't work in boats, unless you have a hotrod boat with proper exhaust and light weight.

A properly built quench effect would be nice but not included on a standard new or reman engine.

As mentioned you need to check your gear ratio, a new prop would at least be in order if you change power too much.

I don't think gear ratio is that big a deal. Unless you go for a crazy build we are only talking about the 50 or so hp. That is easily fixed with different prop. What the 350 has over the 305 is torque and staying up on plane power.

Make sure that if you do your own build don't re-use the 305 heads. Although interchangeable the 305 heads are really restricted.
