    New engine, no power!-gctid388133

Have recently installed a new short block- 5L 260 hp, 2bbl. This past weekend finally on the water. 2 adults, full fuel, full freshwater and calm lake. Could only get 9 mph at 2800 rpms WOT. Have an Apollo 16 x 14 5/8 stainless steel 4 blade prop. Any thoughts.

WOT should be about 5000rpm on that block.....like to see some specifics on the engine/drive.

5L engine if carbed shoud be about 200-220 hp; the MPI is 260 hp (Mercruiser)

Check timing and verify that its correct. Dont use it until you do. You dont want to ruin you new engine. That is one of many things that can be wrong but is one of the most damaging.

Next check if the throttle is working properly and the carb is opening all the way.

Check the fuel filter as well. If you have a clogged filter, you will not be able to attain WOT.

Update on my lack of power problem. I probably should have said where I boat. I live in the Texas Panhandle. Pampa is at about 3200 feet above sea level. The lakes in this area range from about 2000' to 4200' above sea level. Given the fact that the timing and carburetion is correct it looks like prop replacement is in order. Other boaters in the area seem to be having some fuel issues too. Bayliner said the WOT rpms should be 4400 to 4800. I think I will be looking at something less than that. If there are any other "high altitude" owners out there with experiences they could shae, it would be greatly appreciated.

On a happy note, the Admiral and I spent two nights aboard at Foss Lake, Ok Memorial Day. We stayed in a slip at night as this was our first overnighter. The wind was terrible and did not want to chance being on the hook. We had a great time.
