  • Thanks to BOC new to me Contessa-gctid387039

Picked up my new to me 87 Contessa 2850 FB. This is my 2nd boat (87 2150 Sunbridge being the first). I wasn't planning on getting a Contessa until I started reading all the good reports from BOC about them. Got to say we absolutely love it. It has the Ford 460, so you know it loves the gas. We have it at the marina and can't go 2 days without getting on it. The whole family loves this boat. Will post pictures soon. Anyways thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Just in time for salmon season to start.

Congrats on your new boat.I had an '89 2858 Contessa, practically the same boat with same engine as yours, i absolutely LOVE the ford 460 King Cobra, the sound she makes is like music, such a good strong motor, i used to have a 2955 with same engine so sweet.I sold mine & just bought a 3055 diesel because gas prices here at UK marina pumps is £2 per litre!!Here is a picture of my old Contessa..

Yeah my boat had the 460 king cobra, pretty bad experience for me. I had to repower the boat the first season I had it. I don't want to put a grey cloud overtop of your new boat and enjoyment but ya make sure your shift cable is adjusted properly so the dog clutch engages correctly on that king cobra.

My grandpa had one of these boat too and he didnt have any problems, so maybe it's just luck of the draw!

Anyhow enjoy the boat they have a great layout that makes it feel bigger then a 28ft

I am planning a repower at some point. Would like to go with a duoprop. I like the 460, but it sure likes using fuel. Right now it shifts fine, but the engine rpm's slow way down and the engine almost dies before it comes back to life. Is this anything like what you were experiencing?

Our member Wayne Miller did the KC to Duo Prop drive swap years ago.

Since the Ford 460 is Borg Warner pattern capable, he was able to take the 460 to the DP-C1 drive. [SIZE]1 wrote:

From Wayne's reports, he is very happy with the results.

No I never experienced the idle fluctuating too bad when I put it in gear. The luck for me began on the 2nd trip out when I snapped the driveshaft yoke in half. Had to get a sea tow at 8pm at night back to my marina. I replaced the driveshaft and luckily the engine coupler wasnt damaged. Once again I tried to use the boat and I couldnt get the boat up on plane, so I did some research on my prop selection, sure enough I had the wrong one. Ordered the original spec propeller and that did improve things but still the boat would struggle to plane, and I knew it shouldnt because my grandpa had the same engine in his old boat and that thing used to fly. Did some more investigation, found a dead hole in the motor, bad spark plug lead, fixed it, improved a bit but nothing great.

Long story short finally got frustrated enough to go get larger trim tabs, didnt do anything really, so I took the manifolds off because one cylinder was lower in compression then the others, not to bad but still lower, and of course I had water leaking in one cylinder. I had the whole thing ripped out and repowered by the pros.

My new package is quite nice besides the bellow replacement I had to do on it that destroyed my gimbal and u joints. It cruises at 22-24knots depending on seastate and current all at around 3600-3700rpm. Top speed 34.6knots, not to bad for a cabin cruiser. The duoprop really does help like Rick says.

I dont know if you would want to invest the money just for the conversion as opposed to getting that 460 right out of there.

Anyhow if you have any question about your boat just let me know, anything that needs to be done ive probably done it!

Seawise, just for clarity, I was responding to Aegerter36's comment; "Would like to go with a duoprop." I took that comment to mean the Volvo Penta Duo Prop, not the Mercruiser BIII drive. My explaining what Wayne Miller did, was regarding the 460 to Volvo Penta DP-C1 drive.

Until each can use the other's propeller technology, these do not perform the same in some respects.

Oh sorry Rick, I didnt mean that he could put the Bravo III on his 460, I was just agreeing that you can put a Duo Prop drive on, in reference to the Volvo Penta Duo Prop that you told him about. I looked into it myself before deciding on the whole repower package. I just wanted to give him some feedback of how my Duo Prop has been performing, thats all.
