Any thoughts? The Garmin 546 costs about 800 bucks. I hate to re-buy things.

I would send back in to Garmin for repair, it would have to be cheaper than buying one. They have pretty good turn around times,

I agree, contact Garmin. They might fix it for free if its a known issue. They are pretty good about repairs.

Buy the iPad. It's pretty remarkable what it will do, and Garmin will have made the decision for you. :-)

I've had several of the Garmin Nuvis and handhelds and they don't seem to have a long life. They freeze up at the worst time, search for satellites forever. I'll never buy one. It is what my employer provides though.

This is a better use of an iPad than as a chartplotter:

But on a serious note, Wayne is better off sending a message to Garmin's support division. They have a flat fee to repair chartplotters. They charge $99 for mine. I looked it up so I know how much it costs in case it ever dies on me.
