my local west marine had the name of a guy that braided the chain and rope together. $25 bucks and it is a beauty. Just in case.

When I replaced the one that came with our 2651, I went ahead and planed for worst case and bought 30' of Galv. chain and 300' of 5/8 .... braided it together myself. If you don't know how to braid the rope to the chain.... there are lots of pics and videos on youtube etc... actually pretty easy. Oh, and use heat-shrink at the ends. Makes for a proff. look.
We normally only have let out more than the chain when in the Gulf over a dive site.

Windlass or no Windlass, the G4 chain is much nicer to handle and to stow, IMO.
And IMO, you'll definitely prefer the chain splice over than of some type of coupling device.
Anchor swivel connectors are great also.
The chain splice is simply a variation of an eye splice.

that splice does look sweet, maybe ill just bite the bullet and go with a new rode spliced with some quality chain . A windlass sure would be nice too. Thanks guys , and thanks for the cool pics and links Rick.

You are welcome. You will like having that chain splice!
Quick story on myself.
First time that I ever tried an eye splice, it came out near perfectly. Next one..... I had to take several starts at it.
First time that I ever tried a chain splice, it came out near perfectly. Next one, same story! Had to start over a few times.
Now I can make one easliy, but occasionally I'll have to double check myself on that start up phase.
If you get tripped up, that's where it will be!

i think i willleave the splicing to the pros this time , i do not feel confident enough to trust my precious cargo to my first time at it . I think this winter i will definitly have a crack at it though!

Practice with a short piece of three strand and a few chain links.
Use the tape off method, and melt the ends of the three strands.
You can start over as many times as you need to.
