3.0 mercruiser getting harder to start- won(39)t idle-gctid386327
I have an 06' bayliner 185 with the 3.0l engine. Last year it became hard to start without pumping the throttle. At the end of the year the engine would not idle, just stall out. Needless to say, this makes starting out tricky. Is this a choke issue? An expensive repair?
I would appreciate any input on this matter, thanks
Also check the choke housing. On my 05 185 3.0L the housing comes loose about one a season from the vibration. you don't notice it untill its flooping around. Won't come off the engine bottle rattles in place. I have found that this can alter the setting on the choke and can cause start and idle problems.
I had a very similar problem two seasons ago - just would not idle. Started by looking at the fuel line, then fuel filter, ultimately ended up having the carb rebuilt for about $300. Did the trick.
Thanks for the responses. I picked up the boat this past weekend. They said the carb was filled with crap from ethanol damage to rubber fuel line.300.00 to remove & clean out carb..Runs great now.
Had a similar problem with our boat (V-8 w carb). Turns out the spark arrester (Metal thing with thin metal wafers with small air gaps in between & sits on top of the carb) was clogged. Cleaned it with some solvent, rinsed dried it and put it back on. Problem solved.
I would try the in-line screen filter at the line going into the carb. I just changed mine and the screen was clogged with jelled fuel. I did a few other things, but based on what I saw, that definitely had to be a big part of the difference.

send me the carb and the kit i'll do it for free.
Chief Alen I wanted to know if you can help me rebuild my carb. I try to fix my stuff myself and i find joy and pride in that but I never rebuilt a carb before and I would feel more confident with your guidance. I am about half an hour away from Manalapan so I can drop it off or stop by for you to show me what to do if you don't mind...

Had the same problem with an Evinrude Etec. Be sure you change ALL the fuel lines to something that can stand alcohol.
The hoses that came from the injector pump on that Etec just melted. Gas poured out. You would think these engines would have the correct hoses. Not so.
My first problem was with the original hoses on the boat. That cost me an injector pump. I thought my problems were over. Ha.
