Just purchased a new to me boat- 1978 Bayliner Saratoga-gctid383942

    Hello Everyone,

I just purchased my first Bayliner. It is a 1978 Bayliner Saratoga. I'm not sure exactly which model as I don't have any paperwork on the boat. My guess is it is an Express. There is no flybridge and the only hard covered cabin is in the bow. Above the helm is a canvas cover. It has a sink, an alcohol stove, an ice chest and a v-birth. There is a single Volvo Penta V-8. I'm not sure if it is a 350 or a 305 motor. It has a Quadrajet Carb.

Anyone know about these boats? How can I tell which V-8 it is. I can't find an identification plate on the motor. I'd like to run it with a muff so I can check things out... can I use a muff like I use on my outboard motor?

It has not been run for 6 years. I've drained/replaced the the fluids, gone over the electrical. It has trim tabs and they don't seem to work correctly. They do make noises when I push the buttons but I don't think the tabs move up and down.

It does have the electric lift for the outdrive but it is not operated by the original switch with the light. There is just a Radio Shack dual throw switch that raises it and lowers it but it seems to stick.

Any thoughts? I'd love to find an owners manual.

    Thanks in advance- Dave

Welcome, Dave! The boat is an express cruiser, the model Saratoga.

Matt (Download Complete) is our resident Bayliner guru- he should chime in shortly.

Was it a decent boat? Is it worth bringing back to life?

Matt would know for certain, but I'm thinking that there was also a SND F/B version of this boat.

I had one out back for several years. I had plans to turn it into a crabbing boat but decided against it.

I cannot find a good photo of it, but it was similar to this white/yellow boat to the right here.

Yes Dave...... that's it! :kidding And those are Blueberries, not Blackberries! rod

Even from a Google Earth view, you'd have to be somewhat "Boat Illiterate" to think that was a 2850 Bounty F/B boat sitting on a triple axle trailer!

                Where did Arizona Dave go?

Regarding Where did Arizona Dave Go- I'm still here. I am going to post picture of the boat tonight. I'm a school principal and we had graduation last night so I was busy with things of lesser fun than boating. Thanks to all for all the responses- I think I may have found one of the best forums on the net! My Fiat Spider Forum is real friendly too but you guys are quick to welcome a newbie.

Dave, glad to see that you're still here, and we'll look forward to seeing your photos.

BTW, beneath my BOC signature is a hyperlink to our BOC Vault where you'll find a thread dedicated to the AQ series Volvo Penta.

Dave, Matt Train can confirm this, but I think you have a Bayliner Liberty boat... not a Saratoga.

Your sea water pump is a Jabsco. I can't tell which of the two volume pumps it is (std or high volume).

Note that the short body pumps (Jabsco and Johnson) both use the 1027 impeller.

The high volume pumps (both Jabsco and Johnson) impellers look very similar, but there is .090" difference in pump body impeller cavity depth.

If you have the large volume Jabsco, be sure that you get the correct impeller for it. It is very easy to get the two mixed up

Johnson large volume pump impeller = 1.900" in depth

Jabsco large volume pump impeller = 1.990" in depth

Parts counter people get this wrong way too often.

If you end up with the Johnson 1.900" impeller in the large volume Jabsco pump body, it will not pump water.

I have all of the lift unit parts , including the switch and amber light, if you need them.

                        .
