Raymarine steps up- tablets and smartphone can now control head units-gctid381235

I've been on the fence about upgrading; all my hard nav gear is at the lower helm, and I've been using the iPad on the flybridge. I've waited for a solution to have a manufacturer use the capability of the iPad as a repeater and control for a multi-function display.

    Looks likes it has arrived......

Navico also has "GoFree" coming out, hopefully soon. Basically any of the MFDs with the horsepower will be able to support it, for sure all Simrad NS* and HDS Gen2, perhaps HDS Gen1 as well. That's what's cool about the latest generation of MFDs from all manufacturers - they have sufficient horsepower and the hardware capabilities (ethernet and N2K) to be able to add on cool things like this.

In theory, a simple software update would allow your existing unit to connect to the Internet, download apps, etc.
