I don't think I've seen this discussed before so I'd like folks' opinions. I bought my 305 new in June 2003 and had the bottom painted by the dealership. It was painted with an ablative paint, though I don't know the brand. In the following years, I have added one coat of Interlux Micron Extra each year and we're now going into year 9 and it seems there are places where the coat(s) of paint are chipping away (versus wearing away). Is it time to have the bottom blasted and stripped back to the fiberglass, have a new barrier coat put on, and repaint with the ablative again? Is it typical to do this type of procedure every so often? If so, how often, in your opinion? Just curious as I am thinking about doing this at the beginning of next season (already painted her for this season). Thanks.

Soda blasting or suit up and a good full face reperator and sand with 80 grit, I always sand. I keep wondering why boaters paint every year.
I painted mine in 2008 with interlux ultra, 2 full coats and a third on the keel-bow-and chine up, (3 1/2 gal on a 3870) I am hauling the boat out in June, I will scrub the slime off from the winter, and I would bet I will not need to paint untill next year or later, I usually get an easy 5 to usually 6 years on my bottom paint jobs. Prep is a major requirement, all grime must be removed.
Yes paint is expensive, but so is a haul out.

We use Ultra Strip paint remover at my boat yard http://www.jamestowndistributors.com...-Stripper.html, that is easy on the fiberglass and works pretty well, then sand down to bare gelcoat with 60 grit before applying new paint. I usually suggest stripping when the layers get so think the paint falls off after it dries out within a day of hauling the boat, usually it will start cracking first.
