The answer is yes they work - jury is out on how wide they work. IMHO an investment in screening is a better investment than anything

We use the propane fueled mosquito collectors at our yacht club. When you empty them you find they've killed gazillions of mosquitoes but there's still gazillions more out there.

Knock on wood, we have never had a problem with them. Our marina however is not cut into and surronded by land like yours is. We have a steady breeze. If we go on shore it is more of an issue.

They do work, they catch an ungodly number of bugs. Problem is there are 1000x as many that they don't catch. The theory is that bugs don't travel far and if ya clean 'em out in an area it will subsequently stay reasonably bug free thruout the year as the hatch cycles get progressively smaller
I used one for 3 summers and then sold it. It DID work but I felt as tho I would have to run about 6 more to keep my yard clear. As WW says, the bags have a trillion bugs in 'em when you empty them,,,,,but there are a LOT of bugs in the world.
FYI: Disney in Florida uses the same technology. Not the Mosquito Magnets per se, but the same method of catching bugs,,,,so you know it works if they do it.

Funny thing you bring that up... Last time i camp on the river was probably 15-17 yrs ago, we got pounded w mayflies. It was after dark and we couldnt even see to nav the river. Made to federal island and ran like a bastard to the tent. The next morning, we were scooping hand full of mayflys out of the boat! By far the most disgusting thing ive ever been through- 6 ft piles under the lights at Alma lock in the morning! I night to remember- thank God i have a cuddy now haha
