This document shows the equipment REQUIRED to be aboard different classes (sizes) of boats. Its available on-line for those who want to conform with the laws. Also be advised, that many states require additional equipment.
I also strongly recommend that you have a Vessel Safety Check from either the Coast Guard Auxiliary or the Power Squadrons. They can point out defeciencies in your equipment, and recommend additional safety items beyond what the law requires.
This is not to start the pi$$ing match about how your VSC was done by a VSC commando last year, but to advise boaters about a free sevice for their own good. I've been retired from the Auxiliary for 15 years now, and still have my boat(s) done every year. In most localities, the decal is recognized by law enforcement personnel, and my negate having being stopped and searched
