    Bayliner 2655: Powered with 5.0...Underpowered?-gctid343164

    Hi folks,

While I saw just a couple posts on the forum a few years back about the Ciera 2655/5.0 liter, I was curious if there are any owners of this boat/motor combo that are satisfied with the 5.0 motor. I have an opportunity to buy a 2000 Bayliner 2655 with the 5.0 motor for roughly 15k. But I don't want to spend that money if the boat is seriously underpowered.

I will use it primarily on the ICW and I just want to know that I can get it to plane with 4 adults without having to run it at full throttle.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

I don't think you'll have a problem getting on plane, especially if you have trim tabs. I have a 5.8 in my 2550 and the only time I wish I had a little more power was when I had 8 people aboard and was pulling a tube. I made my BIL run to the front of the boat to put a little more weight on the bow.... he's a big boy..

One factor to bring in, is it MPI or Carb?

I dont think either way it will have many issues, use trim tabs and it should be just fine. Serisouly underpowered no...

If you have 6 people + kids + gear + full load then MAYBE it will struggle a bit.

I dont really consider it underepowered until you get to the 4.3L v6 in a 2655, that would be underpowered. Even then I bet it would still get her on plane

I am sure someone has the asme boat that can chime in.

NOTE : thread moved, this is a cruiser

        what he said ^^^^^

The ideal powerplant is the 5.0 MPI with the Bravo 3 dual prop setup.

          Welcome aboard !

I would not buy a boat without a trail run.

And i would take along a guy who really knows boats or a surveyor.

This guy you bring should bring a compression gauge.

Me i would like to check the drive oil.

No it's really not all that bad. If it is the 5.0 MPI (fuel injected) then you'd be more than set. My 1993 2655 has a 230 hp 5.0 carb'd and it only struggled a little one time getting on plane with 6 people, the biggest of which was in the back seat. I don't remember if I used trim tabs that time or not though...I've never had any problem with it other than that though. 4 people no worries. Mine is only 8 feet wide though, where yours is probably closer to 9. Still should perform just fine.

Being a 2000, I bet it's not an MPI. Mercruiser sold a 4bbl 5.0 that put out 260hp for a year or two when the 5.7 was unavailable for some reason. If it's one of those then I wouldn't be worried. If it's the 2bbl 220hp version, I'd make sure to sea trial it first. I had a 2000 2455 with that engine and although it was sufficient, it was borderline underpowered in less-than-ideal conditions.

Underpowered is a matter of perspective. Will the boat do 50, no. With proper use of trim tabs, a clean hull, properly tuned engine and a good prop will it plane and give a nice cruise at 3200-3400RPM's, you bet.

                  And welcome to the zoo.

I used to have a 2455 with the 250HP 2-barrel 350 and B3 drive. I also drive various others with the 305 and Alpha drive, and 305 MPI with B3. Of all those I'd take the 305 MPI by far, and I absolutely HATED the small motor with the Alpha and carb. In that configuration, the 2455 was under-powered, the 2655 would simply suck. So, exactly which motor (HP) is it? Make sure you take a trial drive with full fluids if possible and 4-5 people aboard.

As others have said. Do a sea trial and take some big folks with you. I have a '99 2655 with the 2-barrel 5.7L with a B-3 P24 and have had to go WOT, flaps down, 5 people and it still took some distance to put her on plan. If it wasn't for the B-3 it wouldn't have made it. Mine is 250 HP. If the 5.0L MPI is 260HP and it has a B3, you'll be fine. Just my dos centavos.

Should be fine with a 5.0... might dog a bit coming in over the backs of swells on the incoming. And, if it's a 2 BBL, I'd say it's a no-brainer to swap with a 4 bbl... lots of xtra hp cheap!

Is it the 8'6" beam or 9'5" 2655? Both models were sold in 2000.

If it is a 2bbl. Would there be alot of other engine modifications necessary to accomodatw a 4 bbl. Carb?
