Is anyone willing to engage in a little bit of off-season planning (dreaming?) for upcoming puget sound salmon fishing?

Here's the deal:

We are going to buy a 4588. We currently have a trawler that we cruise, moored in Tacoma. We fish off of it occasionally, but my wife gets very uncomfortable when I bring the boat up close to shore, especially rocks and cliffs -- you know, where the fish are. :side:

The plan is to upgrade the 4588's dinghy, and deck it out for fishing, and this is where I'm hoping you all can add some input.

Here are the required parameters:

[li]Most likely stored on the flybridge, so weight and size are likely the primary limiting factors[/li]

[li]Designed for puget sound salmon fishing, and occasionally crabbing & shrimping, primarily Pt. Defiance area.[/li]

[li]Also usable as an actual dinghy, and runabout[/li]

[li]Able to "comfortably" fish 2 adults and one kid[/li]

[li]Able to mount fishfinder/chartplotter device[/li]

[li]Able to mount 2 down-riggers[/li]

[li]Under $5000 (not including electronics or fishing gear)[/li]

I haven't checked regulations for legality, but I've caught crab in quartemaster harbor in years past...

If you fulfill your "wish" list dinghy it won't fit and davit won't lift it.....however you could tow a very nice "Dinhgy"

We were moored at Foss harbor last year, had my pots out almost everyday.

Crabbing around there simply sucks especially compared to up north Mukilteo/ Whidbey.

Yikes! That's quite the list! Mind posting a photo of your boat so we can see where you want to put it?

I've had a few dingies, and I can tell you, there is no room on one for even a porta-potty. Suggest you use a blanket and a bucket.

IMHO, I think your parameters are a tad reaching. Helm, fish finder, crab pots, and 4 people? If you even get close to that, you will need a boom or crane to get it on your boat.

Had a 9'4" Boston Whaler with a 15hp OB that weighed a ton! Once we even put a crab pot on, there was no room for a second person. I did, however, fish and crab off it, ...but I sure wouldn't take it out into Puget Sound. I had clips on the swim platform fixed to its side rails so it could swing up onto when we bought her, but we had to remove the motor and tank first to use them. Even then, that thing was HEAVY! And with a 15hp, I had to hang onto the the bowline or I'd land up toppling out the back if I took off too quickly. However, I swear I could reach 30mph with it! But with 2 people on it, it strained to get on plane. I eventually took the swim platform clips off and sold them to my berth neighbor.

Next was an 11' RIB that was much lighter, but still had a very limited amount of space. It wouldn't go on the swim platform, and I hated it on the deck, so we towed it behind. I did some fishing off it, but was always concerned about roughing up the bladders pulling crab pots and lines over the sides. Neither one had room for a helm, .........just a small bucket. :S

So, for 4 adults to fish the strait, you are looking at least a 14'er IF the seas are calm, though an 16' would be much safer. Now you are back to the boom or crane.

BTW, these are all open boats, but you could likely get some kind of Bimini put on it. Even then, to get one to protect you and yours from the elements, I doubt $5,000 will buy much.

Just found this photo on YachtWorld. Looks like this is about what you'd be able to put up there, as I'm sure they too would have bought the biggest dingy they could to fit there.

If that Achilles is the 12'6 their pushing the weight limit of that davit/crane if memory serves its rated at 500lb .just the motor and boat is at 400 lb,before anything else,batt,fuel,steering console,seats,gear....I've seen more than one 45 that ripped the crane off.

We have a 12"6 Achilles w/25hp however I upgraded our crane years ago....just a little info.to pass along.

What about something like this 12' aluminum runabout:

While there's no portapotty, I can see putting bimini/dodger on it to get some protection from the elements.... not sure what something like this would weigh though. Probably pushing 500lbs if I had to guess.

IMO, indeed, you are likely pushing 500. It would also be a very uncomfortable boat for even 3 people fishing, but it would work good for 2 people.

On the 4588 #500 is really pushing the limit given that the ratings were aggressive when the boat was new 30 years back. Many of these 45 davits have a real problem holding up much less than that 500#'s without some real repairs and/or modifications. Do not confuse this davit with the ones on the 47 which share zero parts and can easily lift 750's.

Weight of the tinny is likely near 650#'s - hull, batteries, engine, fluids, seats, controls, pumps, fuel, Bimini, safety gear, ground tackle, etc.

The Livingston makes a pretty good fishing/crabbing platform. It doesn't rock around as much as a rhib because it's a cat.

Easy solution to your problem.Leave the captain at the house when the fish bug hits you.Or give her lots of martinis before you go fishing.Just saying
