  • Transom saver after broken transmission cap-gctid821529

This is a pretty minor "upfit" but I just got back from a good trip on lake Erie and found that the cap on my outdrive was broken. I think what happened is that while trailering the 400 miles (round trip) the engine bounced and the top of it came in contact with the transom. There's a metal plate on the transom right where the cap would have hit. I think the plate may have had rubber over it at one time.

I have heard about supporting the engine while trailering but it never occurred to me that I would need to strap it down so it wouldn't bounce up. I mentioned my problem to a friend of mine and he had a "transom saver" from a pontoon boat he used to have. I welded a small piece of square pipe on to the back of the trailer and the transom saver slides over it. I was going to pin that but decided it was unnecessary. I then ran a strap around the whole contraption.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening or think why I would have had this problem?
