    175 upgrade to hydraulic steering-gctid788577

This winter I decided to upgrade the steering on my Bayliner 175 to a hydraulic steering.

The old one, cable, was stiff and with a big play at the helm.

I selected a kit that was made for the alpha one sterndrive from Mavimare.com, GF300BET.

Had to move the power trim pump and the battery some to make clearance for the cylinder when it was at the end of the stroke.

The kit was mostly plug and play, but working in small areas in a boat can be a bit tricky.

    Waiting for the summer.

Force on steering wheel at diam 350 mm.

Old steering: hard, not measured but estimated to at least 25 lb, with a very stiff Alpha One drive. Much play.

New steering: 5 lb. Can be moved by one finger, with grease nipples installed in the Alpha One drive. No play!

Pretty cool stuff but I'm wondering if there was something going on with the original steering to make it stiff.

Great photos Rydin, thanks. Just have a question of where you bought the GF300BET kit and how much. I'm looking at doing the same in my 2003 175 BR. I'm in Australia, but will have the kit sent to Long Beach CA.
