New to boating and the Forum BR185 owner-gctid405545

As the title states I'm a newbie.

    I bought a 2012 185 Flight with a 3.0

    Couple questions

Will a hydrafoil make a difference on this model of boat in regards to plaining

Will a 19 pitch prop help with water sports?

    Thanks

Just switched from a 23 pitch to a 19 pitch 4 blade. The hole shot is night and day. Next year i am going with a 5 blade stainless steel. They are too bloody expensive here in Canada. If anyone is on their way to alaska from the lower 48 just drop one off for me.

I'm getting re-propped next week. With 2-3 people on board, the boat is OK. Any more than that, you will want more "oomph"

                    14 1/4 x 21 pitch HUSTLER prop.

Doel fin for extra pitch control.

                    LOVE the boat.....Love THE ENGINE.

                    Congrats on the selection !

Welcome aboard! I bought a 2011 185 with a 3.0 a few months ago and have had the same question. Have seen many great things said about changing to a 4 blade prop. Also curious about the hydrafoil vs. smart tabs as the hytrafoild appears to be a quick and easy install. Would like to hear comments from other on this or perhaps I'll start a new post on the topic.

I've been staying out of the hydrofoil discussions (seems to be more of them on the forum these days). But I will chime in here. I have one, the SE300 on my boat. Let me explain a couple things here:

                              1. The hydrofoil systems that are "no drill" are all GARBAGE, stay as far away as possible.

                              2. ANY hydrofoil is worthless on a boat weighing more than about 1500 lbs.

                              3. Go for trim tabs, your friends, your boat, your motor, and you future self will thank you for it. (unless you have a boat like mine that weighs nearly nothing).

With that said, I love my hydrofoil but it helps my tiny boat a lot.

So keep in mind that a hydrofoil only really works when you use the drive to "trim" it out, and that's a no-no on I/O (sterndrive) boats.

IMO, hydrofoils are suited for ONLY outboard motors (and NOT sterndrives), and ONLY little bitty boats.

This is coming from a happy hydrofoil customer....
