    New to Bayliner and Forum-gctid404014

    Hello to all,

    I recently got this 1987 Cuddy 1950.

I have had it on the water and havent found any major issues..(knock on wood).

I Have not learned exactly what all it has, I know the engine is a Chevy 305.

One issue I do have is it has a terrible hole shot for Skiing but top speed is very good.. bout 45-48 with RPM about 4200. I believe it to be Prop choice, (I do not know Pitch of current prop).

Well I hope to learn more about her and post here.

    Happy Boating

Looks like an OMC Cobra drive to me. What is the deal with the expansion plug in the side of the drive?

The original plug was dry rotted I just put that in there so I could test her out. I have the right replacement for it..LOL

Ok so I did some running.. Hole Shot is terrible.. Planed out at about 2500 rpm. (took what seemed like a long time, not sure exactly)

Top Speed was about 43 mph (per GPS) at about 4000 rpm.

Tow rig was my 95 Jeep YJ..

That engine in that boat it should fly. What prop you have on it. You should be turning between 4200-4600 rpm.

What all have you done to the engine ?

Tuned it up, checked the compression, and have a base written down ?

Chief, that would be his base, lol. :kidding

until he gets a look at his prop pitch/diameter....ain't gonna get any better. As you suggested, check normal PM stuff, then start messing with the prop.

Top end sounds good. If plugs, etc, okay, probably need to go down 2 inches in pitch. If 21", down to 19". That should get you 400 RPM's and a better hole shot.

Check Chief Alen's suggestions first....plugs, minor tune up, etc. Hate to see you spending dinero on props if something else.

                    and......:wel-

I have not done anything to the engine yet. Tune up is planned next day off. Thank you all for the info.

engine top rpm is 4000 right now. I do not know how to tell prop Pitch. I looked the prop over and no Markings on Prop.

The prop size ( dia. & pitch ) should be on the hub under the washer / nut.

The prop you have now looks pretty rough, no doubt a new / different one in the correct pitch will help.

A 19" pitch should be a good all around pitch for that engine / hull combo.

I believe I have good condition 19" and 17" props that will fit your Cobra in my collection that I don't need.

                        PM if interested in purchase.

THe boat has a 5.0L (305) OMC Cobra with 230 hp. In that 1950, it should absolutely FLY. Like 50 mph.

                          1. What altitude are you at? I see you are in Indiana, so this may be a moot point, but I will ask it anyway. If you are in IN, go on to step 2.

                          2. Give the boat a FULL tuneup. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, check timing, change all fuel filters, make sure you have fresh gas in it, clean carb.

                          3. Change all fluids - oil in engine, and oil in drive.

                          4. Pull the prop off the drive and get the measurements from the hub. It should be something like 14 x 21P or something like that. You can call the Bayliner dealer and they can tell you what the stock prop was. I would then make sure you either have a new stock prop, or if that IS your stock prop, have it rebuilt at a prop shop.

Go out and test again. Trim the drive all the way in, and firewall the throttle. Measure the time to plane (about 2700 RPM is where it should settle at, on plane, and it should be 5 seconds - or MUCH less). Once you plane off, trim the drive out and count: "One Mississippi, Two Mississippi, Three Mississippi." You should feel the boat "loosen up" and gain a MPH or two. Once you get that taken care of and the boat cruising comfortably at 3,000 RPM, its time to go for gold: Firewall the throttle, and see where the RPMs come up to. Trim the drive out again in small taps until you feel the boat start to lose thrust. Then bump the drive back down until thrust is regained. Then take your maximum RPM readings and speed. You should see 4200 to 4500 RPM, and you should be knocking on 50 mph.

The 305 in that boat was a rocketship. These usually got 3.0L 4 cylinders and performed well with those.

I wanted to reply and let all of you know I aprciate all of the info. I have been working a lot so I have not had the boat out in a while but I am going to do as you have suggested. I will post the results and outcome later.

                            Thank You
