Hello, I'm new to this group as I just bought a 97 1850 Capri LE SE from auction. This boat was neglected and I'm trying to bring her back to life. I finally got the engine running aND I have exhaust both from outdrive and from transom. I'm wondering if this is normal or if I have a crack/break in the exhaust boot / bellows
Thanks for any help. Bryan

Welcome! You are starting well by having some information in your signature, thank you for that. However, is that 4.3 in the Capri? That thing would fly!
As to the exhaust at the transom, there are ports on both sides of the transom plate that should have a soft hose nearby that would pass through the holes on each side. If they don't, no big deal. Yes, there should be exhaust and water coming from those holes as well as out the propeller.
How about some pictures of your auction find?

Normal. The exhaust that comes out at the base of the transom (one on each side of the drive) are exhaust reliefs. As the RPMs come up, the exhaust is forced down out of the prop. There are also other exhaust outlets in the drive too depending on exhaust pressure.
Thanks for the help. let me try to get some pictures out - the boat is in the process of getting cleaned up. We are redoing the carpet (was falling apart in our hands) as well as upholstery on the forward cushions. The back cushions by the engine were missing so we are having some made. We are talking about the bench seats - whether to redo the upholstery or buying after market ones.
The engine is starting to sound good - but looks like a have a small drip at the water pump. I'm thinking it is the gasket and after talking with a friend here, i'm going to drain and outdrive oil and put new there as well. The engine oil was very clean.
Oh and the trailer was included as well

Looks like it has good bones. The water dripping from the water pump. Is it coming from the weep hole or the back plate? That could mean a new one is needed. Be careful, there are sbc water pumps that turn one way for V belts and the opposite for serpentine belts. Ask me how I know. That may be why I have an aluminum high output water pump that didn't work too well on my 383 V belt engine in my muscle car.
