  • Calling all 175br 4 blade prop users-gctid388151

I just purchased an '04 Bayliner 175xt. Love the boat. Took it out on my maiden voyage yesterday, and nailed something that was sticking up from the bottom. I was in fairly deep water, so I can't figure out was it was, but it bent the heck out of the prop and took a chip out of the horizontal fin above the prop. Anyways, before the damage happened, I was running the 14" diameter 19" pitch aluminum prop at WOT. Out of the hole shot I was getting about 4200 rpm, and as my speed increased my WOT got up around 4800 rpm (my owners manual says 4400-4800 optimal WOT). I have a couple questions.

    1. when you're measuring WOT, are you measuring the WOT on the initial hole shot, or total WOT once you get planed and speed up?

    2. Is the factory tachometer accurate enough to use as measuring device for WOT?

Now for the 3 blade vs 4 blade. Due to all the shallow bodies of water we have here in North Idaho, I am not going to use stainless props. Whatever I hit yesterday was big and hard, and while it knock the hell out of my outdrive and bent the crap out of the prop, everything is still there and functional. I am looking for opinions from people that have used 3 blade vs 4 blade props. Do to the RPM's I was getting, I was considering a 14.5" diameter 17" pitch 4 blade aluminum solas amita prop. The math I did should bring up my rpm's a little bit and give me a better hole shot. Anyone using this setup or something close to it? Anyone used it and hated it? Thanks for the help.

I can't think of one bad thing about a 4 blade prop. I experimented with a 4 blade ComProp...great hole shot, lower on plane speeds,WOT throttle about 300 rpm less than with a 3 blade, and a few MPH slower. Hit something in the water, took a small chunk out of 1 blade(cannot be repaired). I did purchace a Solas Amita 4blade 19p...waiting to get on the water...I expect very similair results! My 3 blade is going to get redone, and put away as a spare!

I'm also thinking about an upgrade to 4-blade. Is this the correct size/model? Solas Amita 4, 4-Blade Aluminum Prop, Fits Mercury/Mariner/Mercruiser/Honda 135-300 HP, 14.25 x 19-P RH #1513-143-19

They seem to be pretty low cost at $100

        1. yeppers, take it off the "planed up speed"

        2. i would think so

while i have a 4.3 197, i did about the same thing and pitch from a 3 to 4 blade. works great! in theory, adding a blade will reduce a few hundred rpm, reducing pitch 1 degree adds a few hundred...so it matches up.

i have read over and over that diameter change that small doesn't effect anything. didnt with mine.

At worst, buy it from a place that you can exchange props or return if u dont like.

You must be looking at the Overton's catalouge, you can call cust assist and they will fix you right up...And Yes $100 is a deal!

That was the prop that i was looking at as a cruiser type prop. Based on what people have been telling me and the calculations that prop would work fine. I am going to the 17" pitch because 80% of my use will be wakeboarding.

Here's the installed 4 blade prop, had to modify the trim anode but other than that she looks awesome. Hopefully I'll get to take her out sunday, results to follow.
