    hey everyone I'm new to the forum and a new boat owner.i recently purchased a 1995 bayliner 1850 capri and was getting familiarized with everything today.when starting the boat it has a little trouble starting unless i give it a little throttle.once started i put the throttle back to neutral and it seems to want to stall a bit.once warmed up it does a little better but still sounds sluggish.does anyone have any experience with this.i thought possibly the carb needs cleaning or possibly changing the spark plugs.any thoughts with it are welcome and very helpful.by the way the motor is a mercruiser alpha 1 4 cyl.

    Since it is spring, you may need some fresh fuel unless your are confident it was properly winterized. May also want check the fuel filter and thermostat. These are cheap to do.

      yea i was thinking it might just be stale fuel.do you guys run higher octane in your boats all the time or just as a first fill to flush things out.sorry for the newb questions this is my very first boat

        Make sure you pump the throttle a couple of times before you start up, this sets the choke and gives it some fuel to start on. I normally start at about 30% idle( Centre button pushed in and throttle leaver about 30% forward)

        Once it starts you would normally let it rev a little higher than idle until you get the temp up. Once warm it should idle OK.

        If it is still rough then you may have fuel issues or even plugs.

        If it is new to you and it hasn't got a service history you are best to change the little things like plugs and oil anyway, it only costs a few bucks and can save you a lot of hassle.

        Some people would even suggest getting a full service so you know exactly where you are and log your running hours from there so you know when to get your next service done.

          Welcome to the board !

          I run what I run in my truck for fuel- Regular unleaded.

          Fresh top off might help.

          As has been said here plugs.cap,rotor, therm, maybe ever plug wires.

          Take the stand that all the replacement parts need just that.

          I usually Pump the throttle 3-4 times then come back to 1/3 throttle to start. (center button IN !) to keep the prop disengaged.

          The 4 bangers can be a little touchy till they run for a minute.

          Mine is rock steady from then on.

          Changing oil in the engine and outdrive might not hurt either.

          I would be uncertain when they were last changed unless I had proof.

          You'll love the boat with this sized engine.

          She can move quite nicely and will absolutely SIP fuel.

          A BIG plus with $4+ fuel being the current situation.

            If it was my boat and i just got it i would.... Do a complete tuneup after i purchased a manual year specific. You have points.

            I would change the oil and filter, drain the drive. If the drive oil is good i would just fill her and check a few times during the season.

            I would change out the oil water sep. if equipped with one, i would check the filter element in the fuel pump and the one in the fitting that enters the carb.

            I have the same engine as you i also rebuilt the carb when i purchased the boat and i also sucked every drop of fuel out of the fuel tank.

            I checked the anti-syphin valve and the fuel pickup tube... and blew air thru the tank to make sure the vent was clear.

            I also cleaned every connection and took apart the main harness plug. Don't forget the main ground disconnect the battery first.

            I spent a full day on my boat...

                So took the boat out for the first time today. Did well surprisingly for my first boat. Couple of things noticed though. Still having some issues with the idle. We spotted a bald eagle on the lake so my girl friend wanted to snap some pictures. This was the first time I had slow the boat Dow. To neutral since we left the boat ramps. It kept stalling out. I ended up havig to turn it back on and idle around in circles under slight power. Oil pressure was consistent for the whole ride at 40 psi. Rpms were at around 4500 and max speed was around 33-35 mph. Seemed a little slow for just the 2 of us. Not sure if it's a different prop on it so maybe you guys can have some Insite for my slight issues. Main thig I want to get tackled is the idle stall out. Not very comforting when I try to load back up to the trailer worrying if it's going to stall out. It didn't when we loaded but may not be as lucky next time. Still probly need to give it a tune up. Should I do all those things to help it out. Thanks guys

                  I have found that it runs and idles and starts a little better with 89 octane.

                    Funny thing about that. I put 5 gallons of 93 octane in and then filled uP with 87 but I could only get 8 gallons into the tank before it burped gas up and out the fill hole. When I got on the lake my gauge only read half a tank. Not sure why I could t put anymore gas in but if correct I should have a 29 gallon tank. Could be mistaken but before filling my gauge ready less than a quarter tank.

                      The fuel guages are not that great and extremely sensative to the position of the boat (trailer or water)

                        So more than likely it was full if it was spewing out the filler cap? That sucks because the whole time on the water it read half full so now I have no clue when I'm going to run out of gas

                          Not neccessarily. Mine likes to puke out the vent sometimes if I fill it too fast. Half tank goes a long way though

                              Gas gauges are very unpredictable on smaller boats due to the rocking motion. I trailer my boat. I always launch with a full tank. When I pull the boat out of the water I go straight to the gas station and fill back up. I note how many gallons I used. I have a hand held gps that records my trip. I then can figure out a mpg. Grant it, a lot of things go into fuel efficiency, load, weather conditions, how hard I lean on the throttle, etc. But for the most part the mileage per gallon is pretty consistent.
