Am I going to have to remove my outboard to replace steering cable? It looks really tight, has anyone done this before?

Last winter I replaced my steering on my 2002wa and the motor was just to be lifted up enough to clear the transom and back about 4 inches then move to the port side about about 6” and the cable should pull out of the tube and pull the whole cable out from the helm end. When I replaced mine I went with hydraulic system so I just cut off the cable up at the helm area and again back at the motor end. I then lifted the motor up and back just enough to pull the thu tube cable out and the new rod back into the tube, costly to buy but far better and much better than fooling with the mechanical system, besides I went from a 125 to a 175 motor and needed to do that.Comment

I have a 2000 - 2002 with 150 Merc. I replaced the cable with Hydraulic Steering. I used an car engine hoist - strapped it with tow straps and lifted motor off no problem. The hardest part was undoing the bolts inside the transom hole.....Like Sid - I sawzalled the old cables off and pulled a rope through when I removed them to snake new cables back in. That was the smartest thing I did!!Comment
