My wife and I bought our first boat last year. We bought a Bayliner 2455. 5.7 OMC Cobra. We have a lot of kids and like the fact we can utilize the Cabin for keeping them safe as we are underway.

It was in pretty bad state when we got it but it floated and did not leak. So far we have had to replace the uppergear case, about to change out all the manifolds and risers. We seem to be experiencing cooling issues . When the engine is in ideal it over heats , get speed up to about 20Krpm and it hovers around 160c go any faster or slower and it over heats. We also seem to be chewing though Water Impellers.

I think we have been towed back to dock more than we have sailed back. We have learnt alot about boats in a very short time and are in the main enjoying it.

You may have pieces of old impellers blocking flow. Check outlet hose from raw water pump for debris.

Good idea to check the transom raw water hose for its output volume, but no muff,
large bucket of standing water.
Sounds like your impeller is damaged from overheating.
Check the vent hose to ensure it is not clogged, if clogged pump won't prime.
Make sure that the pump housing Oring is In the groove,
Check the copper pick up tube for any corrosion,

If/when you should need another replacement, consider doing the conversion to a Volvo Penta SX cone-clutch drive.
This allows the removal of the ESA and it eliminates the drive located seawater pump in lieu of an engine mounted seawater pump.

Like suggested, you may have impeller vane fragments that became lodged in the cooling water path that will need to be retrieved.
If so, and if these are not retrieved, you'll likely continue to have problems.
