Twins are 15 dia x 19" pitch on Volvo 280 legs. If you have a different drive, ratios, etc it could be anything. More info?

A single 5.0 is going to be screaming at WOT, to do 20kts, and is VERY unlikely to be original, are you sure it's a 305?? should be a 350. Outdrive would be a 280 or 290, and with a 350, a 16x13 or 16x15 VP or Michigan Wheel " elephant ear" would be a good choice.

An 86 Contessa is actually short of 28 ft, factory spec is 27.5, although in actuality, it's about 27 ft 8 in, from transom to bow .

It had better damn well NOT be a 5.0.

The 1986 Contessa based with a 5.7L 260 hp Volvo.

What do you have in there now? If it's a 5.0, then it was repowered and all bets are off.

Brad, look at the casting number on the engine block to find out what you have.

That is true..... these are not actually a 28 foot boat.
Even so, this boat will never perform well with a SBC 5.0L engine in it.
At mimnimum, it needs a well built SBC 5.7L .... or, a 1.95:1 Duo Prop lower unit addition.

1986 Contesss were actually around 31' LOA.. I had an 89, same boat with an OMC 7.5 power packsge. The earlier, Volvo powered boats perform quite well with a single 350 ci engine.

Agreed, the OMC boats took a performance hit because they were not as efficient as the Volvo boats. The 7.5s struggled to perform as well as the 5.7L Volvos did. Add a Duoprop to a VP boat, and well...it's all over.
