I have a 1992 2452 alpha gen 1. About 1400 hours on it, I am the 3Rd owner for last 14 years. Mechanic had me come checkout my boat today. The distributor Shaft was wore out. Timeing advance a full 180 degrees. Now we are concerned cam Shafter is damaged. We won't know until l we pull the motor. Anyone ever seen or heard of this before? I am not very mechanical so I hope I conveyed engine information.

Welcome to the forum!!
It sounds like the distributor gear is worn, or is it just the shaft bushing? The only time I have seen this,is when someone uses a vortec roller cam with the old style distributor.

Shaft bushings, we're so wore out that mechanic is concerned we could have camshaft damage.

Oh I see ok. I have never seen that on a sbc. I would try a new distributor and see how it goes. I highly doubt there will be any damage.
Take a look down at the camshaft gear.

IMO Fix/replace the distributor and or the bushing & drive gear issue and reinstall, not sure pulling the engine is necessary.

I fealt like my mechanic was not comfortable with that option. Is it possible the cam shaft is damaged and made the drive shaft bushings wear out or, more likely the drive shaft bushings are just wore out, and cam shaft is fine? The mechanics were concerned because they have not seen this happen very often.

I have seen many distributor shafts wear out. I have never seen a camshaft have an issue relating to the distributor drive gear. 28 years as a tech, 10 of those in an engine machine shop. Other than issues relating to wrong gear on the distributor shaft. If your gear looks ok on the distributor, and the cam gear looks ok, you are good to go.

Ditto what he said, I had 30 years in automotive machine shop and the cams don't wear, the distributor bushings can. I noticed in a manual I got that with our boat that Penta/Chevy 350's can have a direct gear drive, no timing chain. I only used one of those on a Sprint car running a Isky 505 magnum roller cam these run the cam backwards and we had to use a special bronze distributor gear.
