I am going to replace the thermostat on my 1986 Bayliner 2850 Contessa Sunbridge with Volvo 260A engine / 275 Drive. In looking at the Doug Russel schematic, there is a sealing ring, a lock ring, and then a gasket. I have done many thermostats on cars and it's normally a thermostat and a gasket. The thermostat is 17 dollars and the lock ring is 34 dollars? Is there any trick to replacing it or things to look out for. Can any of these parts be re used? I just don't want to pull it apart and have all these parts fall out or into the engine. Thanks for any advice.

Mike, I assume that this is raw water cooled????

You will no doubt find some rust in there and on the lock ring.
If you can dry this part off well, and if you have access to a bead blaster, give the area a good blasting before attempting to remove the lock ring.

Apparently there is an early (p/n 835552) and late (p/n 855486) style locking ring..... later one being around $9.

Not to counter Rick's sage advice, but my AQ260A does NOT have a lock ring on it. When I ordered my thermostat from Wholesale Marine, it was sent with a T-stat, rubber seal, and the gasket. I cleaned out the T-stat housing and installed it that way, and haven't had a problem since.

I assume in my case that the t-stat lock ring must have been discarded long ago.
