Hey Guys,

I have a 2002 bayliner 215 with swim platform 20.9'.
It has the 5.0 i/o mercruiser v8 with 220 hp.

It is also bottom painted for first time recently.

I am not able to get the thing over 36 mph trimmed out. Is that normal for this boat? I feel like my friends with 4 cylnders are going that fast and faster, and I have a v8? shouldnt I be putting up some better speed?

Also, what is the best RPM / speed to run a boat like this for best gas mileage?

thanks.

Not enough info......
That engine should turn 4400-4800 RPM at WOT. If it does not and it used to there is an engine problem.
For 220 HP and a 21.5' boat, 36 does sound a bit low.
On the calculator, I used 220 HP, 4000#, and a hull coefficient of 180 and got 42.5MPH.
What is your WOT rpm?
When is the last time the engine was tuned?

Just tuned the engine, new plugs, distributor cap/rotor.
WOT RPM i belive is around 4400-4800 RPM. meter goes up to 6000 but i think i only get to around 4800 as a max probably. Do you think the bottom paint is maybe slowing it down? or is something really missing here?

The WOT is OK. How are you measuring the speed? GPS or that thing which is horrribly inaccurate mounted on the dash?
How long have you had the boat? Is this a problem from the first outing or is it something which suddenly happened?
Usually, when the speed is way down so is the rpms.
Does not compute.

Why are speedos so crappy? Mine registers only on LH turns- new pitot tube and checked all the hose for kinks and leaks. Frustrating...

I would expect low 40's with that rig. I've got 290-300hp on a 23'er and get 45mph @ 4800. A good cruise speed should be in the 3200 - 3400rpm range.

Yea I agree with Seapuppy.
We have 2000 21" maxum Cuddy with a 5.7 250hp and we can get to 53mph on GPS lightly loaded and trimmed up.

My 1988 2150 capri with the 230 HP 5.0 does 42MPH (GPS) @ 3900 RPM. I know the RPM is low but I'm happy with it.

Has it always peaked at this speed? if so you may need to change your prop. If not it may simply be a tune up issue.
