Spent three days on the lake with the family. We had a great time. Unfortunately a huge mechanical issue came up on the last day.
When trying to stop forward motion of the boat I put it into reverse and the motor revved way up like it was in neutral. The shifter has always been a little stiff. But there has never been any indication of something going wrong.
Needless to say I tried reverse many more times all with the same result. Thankfully we were able to drive forward without any issues. So we headed straight for shore and loaded up on the trailer.

There is no grinding noise or anything else associated with the problem. My question is weather this is a gear problem with the lower unit, or is it associated with the shift cables?

Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any insight? Any and all comments or suggestions are appreciated.

Dealing with almost that exact same issue, except I had some grinding. Other times it would engage ok. Lower unit lube looked good so hopefully there's no damage.

Willing to bet it's an issue with your shift cable (adjustment or new cable),.

I hope you're right. I hate to fork out $$$ to tear apart the lower unit.

Somebody please point him to the Stuart Hastings site. Tac, you can Print out Hastings's shift mechanism adjustment instructions and follow themeasily enough.

BTW, on an OMC if the shifter's "a little stiff, that in itself indicates a problem. A properly adjusted OMC shifter is very easy to shift.

Thanks. I did not realize that. I'll try to google hastings unless someone has a direct link.

This seemed like good info, however I have also heard many times that this is best left to a professional with some experience adjusting. Doing it wrong can cost you a gearset.

Ishi, you're probably right. I have a mech locally who cut his teeth on OMC equipment, but these days not a lot of mechanics are familiar with them. Stuart's instructions seem pretty clear, and should be of help to tac - or his mechanic.

I used to be a car mechanic. So I'll give it a look. But if it looks like I'm gonna screw something up I'll take it in.

I'd venture a guess that a silent failure to engage will mean the gearset is OK. The gears in the lower unit of a dog clutch cobra, which I believe the 89 is, are always turning whether in our out of gear. I lunched the gears in my King Cobra last summer, and you can't NOT hear it. At least that was how mine went.
