I have been given an old, but operating, Garmin GPS 45. Is it worth investing in the laptop interface (@ about $40) plus software for the Great Lakes? If so, what software would you recommend?

That's a nice GPS. I had one that I let go with my last boat. It has a great antenna and is very accurate.

I think the cable would be worth it.

Check first with Garmin for availability of Great Lakes software for it.

I used mine to run Blue Charts, but they're shutting that software down now. If you have a laptop, it works great though with the GPS-45.

They are shutting down BLUE CHARTS? Do you know what they are replacing it with?
