7 13/64". You can measure this with a T-Square and Torpedo Level.

Here is the link on the whole OMC Shift adjustment. Very good reading for OMC Owners.

Pay close attention to your bell crank adjustment/freedom of movement also. More often than not, crud builds up where the bell crank pivots in the drive. I just went through the whole shift cable/shift adjustments on the (3) cobra outdrives I own.

Once you have everything the way it is supposed to be, you will not have any problems with the shifting.

That has been my experience too, once my mechanic got it set up right the only things I have done for the past 5 seasons were to make sure that area behind the bellcrank is cleaned out and well greased....the control cable pivots are greased...and the engine is tuned well enough to get it to idle between 500-600 rpms on the water in gear. A well adjusted Cobra really does shift with 2 fingers....

I take it you pulled the shift rod out? Did you replace or at least clean&lube the o-ring? A lot of crud can collect around it and might eventually scar/tear the O-ring and cause water/oil seapage.
5 cents for an O-ring, $1500 for a set of new gears. :)

You can check that with a carpenter's square, however once that height is set, it should not change. Check height from the lower unit casting, not from the bolt on cover!

1989 2650...an ongoing restoration...but I'm totally clueless...It just happened to be running the day this photo was taken.
Isn't owning a boat always an ongoing restoration?
