After wrecking three shaft brushes by catching them on my clothes getting to the outboard side of the stbd engine, is there any reason the brush can't be mounted so it is on the bottom side of the shaft? Gravity has some advantage but it's spring loaded. Just thinking.

IMO the only thing that matters is positive contact, not it's orientation. Will work just as well at 6 o'clock as 12.

A marine mechanic told me once that if you do not clean the contact surface of the brush frequently it will not work. Just thought I'd pass this along since upon learning this a friend of mine realized that he had never cleaned his.

Mine are two pieces that clam shell around the shaft. They don't really care about orientation. I'm not sure that cleaning them is entirely necessary. They're just carbon blocks and cleaning them would only shorten the life. If you're getting good connection to bond, you're fine.
