HI everyone I need some advice. I have a 2005 bayliner 288 with a mercruiser 300 diesel. Has done 600 hours and is generally a great boat.
Recently I have been unable to get it on the plane. It will run up to 2400 rpm no problem but can't get to 2800 where the turbo kicks in. With a following swell of 1.5m it gets up enough speed and thus revs for the turbo to work and will get on the plane and Rev out as normal.....but without this assistance it's 2400 rpm / 10kts and it smokes like a train.
Local agent has checked filters, throttle assembly turbo and lifted it out to check the hull. They are now scratching their head.
Any ideas ?????

How much growth is on the bottom? I put my 2556 in in May and by October I struggle to get on plane due to growth....

If the bottom was clean, no scum, then I'd key on your "smokes like a train" symptom. Also, you said "agent". Is that what we would call a mechanic? If so, a marine diesel mechanic? There is a difference.
Oh, btw, welcome to the BOC!
With the loss of power and the smoke, I think I'd be looking at the injectors and the turbo. If the injectors have some crud in them they will not fire with a pop, more like a dribble, and/or could have a poor spray pattern. Again, a dribble. The turbo could be gummed up or have something preventing it from spinning freely.
Others will jump in throughout the day, but it helps if you add some detail in your signature like where you are and like to cruise.
Again, welcome!

You indicate a 300 HP diesel what engine? Turbo will not kick in till 2400 RPM to late most will power on at 1500, so get a regular Diesel mech. and have him check things out.

Hi

I have the same boat in the UK, are you sure its 300hp, they never made it in that variety only a mercruiser mechanical injection 220hp and the 250hp d-tronic electronic injection, so best check the accuracy of this, otherwise its either had a new engine fitted, with a mercruiser d-tropic 300hp or someone has been messing with it.

The 300hp variety should be literally jumping out the water!

Black smoke is unburnt diesel which is pointing to over fueling.

Show me a pic of the engine it should be clearly marked 300hp with decals ontop and the front by the fuel tank if it is.

Out of curiosity what is the WOT on yours normally, my 250hp tops out at about 24knots, I am sure this motor should get me to about 28knots but so far its eluded me.

I have just repainted hull and sanded it so its smooth as hell, tried running lighter with no water or half a tank of fuel, always 24knots even if its fully loaded.

It was actually worse when I bought it only getting 21-22knots as it was under propped reving its nuts off, i went from a 22p prop to 25p and I gained 2-3knots. This is a 3 blade duo prop.

Be interested to see what you get.

They made 4.2 Dtronic 300 HP.
Cummins Mercruiser 4.2 ES, VM 254.
Should do 30 knots easily...

Did they sell it with the option of 300hp from factory standard? Never seen this before.

Hi All
Finally got it sorted after firing the local Mercruiser service agent and going elsewhere. Turned out to be a cracked wastegate housing which was bleeding out most of the boost pressure. Apparently although there was a crack when i bought it that caused it to be a little sluggish getting onto the plane it went undiagnosed. It now jumps out of the hole like a fizz boat and pulls 100rpm less at cruise, no smoke and better fuel economy.

Thank you for the report... :)
i will check that out tomorrow.... it was pretty expensive (about 900 for only the house and the valve was almost the same)
did you just changed the wastegate house?

was the crack to inside the valve= letting it out in the exhaustelbow, or was it a leak to the outside of the wastegate= out in the engine compartment
