Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster. I'm attempting to resurect a 1985 2850 contessa command bridge. Started the engine, and it seemed that the engine circulating pump pulley was banging into the water pump. I removed the pulley, and the water pump seemed to turn ok, so it looks like the pulley is bad (lot of rust on the back). My question is whether or not this pulley is something I can pull from an auto junkyard, auto parts store, or if not, what is the part number I need to be searching for on ebay. This pulley is double grooved, single belt. Thanks

1. Is the pulley a baklite plastic material? They fail due to being a car type that is not built for the high rpms of a boat engine.
2. You can replace it with a metal one but most every metal one is about 1" bigger than the original. So, you will need to get a longer belt.
3. Make sure the extra sized pulley will fit under the engine cover when closed.

Definitely metal, well rusted on the inside, which may have may have made it spin a little funny?

It's double groove, only outer is used for alt and crank.

OK, I was able to get one out of two questions answered ....
:kidding

I know this is a 1985 2850 contessa command bridge... but what model engine/drive?

Volvo Penta Engine/drive ?
Ford Pinto?
John Deer?
Briggs and Stratton?

Now it should be Volvo Penta and a SBC marine engine.
If volvo penta, does it have the Crankshaft Raw Water pump?

Scott, it is a Chebby!

It should be a single shiv old style chevy circ pump pulley. GM p/n 3927797AF

Here is that M/C pulley that's on auction.... WOW.... $150!!!! New, over $300

I have the single shiv pulleys on my boat...... Port pulley the F is not clear..... on the Stbd it appears to be an F.

In a double shiv (of which I have in my shop), it will be GM p/n 3942992BA

The B on the double shiv could be an 8 if you come up short on that GM part number.

Pretty sure that those are correct.

Both crank and water pump pulley are double grooved, you're right, only outer groove is used. Concerned about whether the single groove water pump pulley will line up with both crank AND alternator.

I'll bet either can be picked up and an auto wrecking yard.

I'm curious as Scott is... if you don't need for fwd shiv.... why buy a double?

I obviously don't need a double; the question is, whether or not a single lines up in the same plane as the outer on the crank (also a double), and the alternator.

Well, I'm almost certain that when comparing the single to the double, that the rear most shiv of the double is placed in the same relative position as the "only" shiv is on a single pulley..... (holly cow... did that even make sense?)
IOW's, if you were to measure from the Circ Pump mounting flange surface to the rear most shiv.... it would appear that both rear most shivs would align with one another! This would make the second shiv fwd of a single shiv position.

Most of these that do not have P/S (for example) use the single on the circ pump. The double will no doubt work and take the guess work out of it!

I can't believe that it's been so difficult tracking down this simple part, without which, no splash! I purchased p/n 3942992 from ebay, but this pulley is a little deeper (hits water pump inlet, and outer groove slightly misaligned). Does the ba at the end of the Volvo p/n mean something? Anybody have one?

Brad at Fairview Marine has several of these. I was there just the other day and had three/four of them in my hand.
I even have a double shiv of the same style right here in my shop.

Either of us should be able to supply you with this very common pulley.

Give a holler if you want one.
If you PM me, give me an email address... I don't much care for the PM system.

Rick
